University of North Texas
College of Arts and Sciences
The General Studies program offers a multidisciplinary approach to education. The program provides the opportunity to integrate a variety of self-selected fields of study.
In response to Employer's call for a renewed emphasis on well-rounded educational backgrounds, the College of Arts and Sciences offers a Bachelor of Arts with a major in General Studies. The focus of the major is on the diversity and flexibility of the degree and is not limited to a single specialized field.
Graduates of the General Studies program have gone into such career fields as: Law, Medicine, Business, Computers, Art, Counseling, Teaching, Science, and Various Entrepreneurial Endeavors.
General Studies majors complete all the requirements for a Bachelor of Arts degree, including 128 semester hours, 42 advanced semester hours, all general University requirements and all University Core and College of Arts and Sciences requirements .
Instead of the usual major/minor format, General Studies majors choose three fields of study, earning a minimum of 12 advanced hours in each field. The selection of three fields is designed to ensure a broad range of academic endeavors consistent with the overall philosophy underlying a program in General Studies.
Major Requirements: 36 advanced hours, comprised of 12 advanced hours in each of 3 fields, subject to the following limitations:
1. At least one field must be chosen from those offered in the College of Arts and Sciences.
2. If more than one field is chosen from outside the College of Arts then both may not be selected from the same school or college.
3. No more than one field may be selected from a single department/division within the College of Arts and Sciences.
4. A 2.5 grade point average is required on all courses attempted in the major.
