Overload Policies and Procedures

NOTE: NO OVERLOADS ARE PERMITTED FOR THE MAY MINI-MESTER. 

Fall or Spring Semesters
A student with a GPA of less than 3.0 may register for a maximum of 19 hours. Students who wish to register for more than 19 hours (maximum 21 hours) in a Fall or Spring semester must meet one of the following conditions and obtain approval in advance from the Dean’s Office for Undergraduates and Student Advising (GAB 220):

• At least a 3.0 GPA on a minimum 15-hour UNT residence load for the semester just completed.
• At least a 3.0 GPA on a minimum 12-hour UNT residence load for the summer terms just completed.
• At least a 3.0 GPA on all work completed at UNT and with a minimum 24 hours of credit at UNT.

Summer Terms
During the summer term/semester, a full-time undergraduate student with a GPA of less than 3.000 may select multiple sessions for a maximum of 18 semester hours. Undergraduate students may schedule a maximum of 4 hours in 3 Week session, a maximum of 9 hours in 8 Week session, a maximum of 8 hours in 5 Week 1 session, a maximum of 7 hours in 5 Week 2 session, and a maximum of 15 hours in 10 Week session. Students who wish to register for more than the maximum hours in any summer term or combination of summer terms, must meet one of the following conditions and obtain written approval in advance from the Dean’s Office for Undergraduates and Student Advising (GAB 220):

• At least a 3.0 GPA on a minimum 15-hour UNT residence load for the semester just completed.
• At least a 3.0 GPA on all work completed at UNT and with a minimum 24 hours of credit at UNT.

3 Week term

• No overloads will be granted for the 3 Week term. A student may take a maximum of 4 hours during the 3 Week term. Students may not register for the 8 and/or 13 Week terms while enrolled in the 3 Week term.

Load for Employed Students 

The university recommends that students who work full-time not schedule more than 6 semester hours in a semester or 3 hours in a summer term.

Definition of Undergraduate Load

Full Time: long semester, 12 or more hours; summer session, 4 to 6 hours per term. 

Three Quarter Time: long semester, 9 to 11 hours; summer session, 3 hours per term. 

Half Time: long semester, 6 to 8 hours; summer session, 2 hours per term.
