Students certified to teach in the Social Studies option may teach any Social Studies course (grades 8-12) including; Texas History, US History, World History, Government, Economics, World Geography, Psychology and Sociology.
The major in Social Science with a composite teaching field of Social Studies consists of the following requirements:
1. History 21 hours (including 9 advanced hours):
HIST 1050, 1060, 2610, 2620, 4700 plus 3 advanced hours from group A, and 3 advanced hours from group B or group C:
A. Advanced U.S. History: HIST 3150, 3500, 3550, 3650, 3660, 3710, 3720, 4020, 4400, 4410, 4420, 4430, 4440, 4450, 4460, 4470, 4640, 4680, 4750, 4760, 4780, 4790, 4800, 4830, 4840, 4850, 4860, 4870, 4880, 4930 and 4260 when applicable.
B. Advanced European History: HIST 3460, 3470, 3750, 3760, 4010, 4020, 4050, 4060, 4070, 4120, 4130, 4140, 4220, 4230, 4250, 4290, 4300, 4330, 4340, 4350, 4360, 4370 and 4260 when applicable.
C. Advanced Non-U.S. and Non-European History: HIST 3010, 4120, 4170, 4180, 4190, 4530, 4540, 4550, 4560, 4570, 4580, 4590 and 4260 when applicable.
2. Political Science 9 hours: PSCI 1040, 1050 plus 3 advanced hours from: 4200 or 4210.
3. Economics 12 hours: ECON 1100, 1110, plus 6 advanced hours: 3050, 4100 or 4850.
4. Geography 10 hours: GEOG 1200, 1170, 1710(4hrs).
5. Psychology 6 hours : PSYC 1630 and 1650
6. Sociology 6 hours: SOCI 1510, plus 3 advanced hours : 4160 or 4750.
7 . Research Component 3 hours : SOCI 4870.
Total hours in the Major = 67 (includes 24 advanced hours)
Up to 22 hours from the Major may apply to the university core.
8. Education Certification 21 hours:
Contact the College of Education (105 Matthews Hall) for Certification Courses.
Teacher certification requires a 2.75 GPA on all courses attempted in the teaching field, all education courses and on all course work attempted.
In addition to the major listed above students must complete all university core, college , and remaining degree requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Social Science.
