Larry
Wisdom - Ulys Knight Spirit Award
Era, Cook County - B.S. Industrial Arts/Education,
1968
Larry is currently the Owner and President of the Weaver Wisdom Body Shop,
Inc., as well as the Owner and Operator of the L&L Black Limousin Cattle
Company. He is also very active in his profession and in the community.
Mr. Wisdom is the Chairman of the DISD vocational Advisory Committee,
as well as a Teacher and Coach for the Denton Independent School District.
He is also very supportive of the UNT athletics and the University.
Mark
A. "Tony" Altermann - Green Glory Award
Dallas, TX - B.S. Education, Speech and Drama
1965; M.S. Speech and Drama 1968
Mr. Altermann is the President and Co-Owner or the Altermann & Morris
Galleries in Dallas, Houston, Santa Fe and Hilton Head. He was the Chairman
for the President's Council at UNT, and a past Trustee for the Dallas
Repertory Theater as well as the past Director of the Advisory Board for
the Dallas Visual Arts Center. He is currently on the Advisory Board for
the School of Dance and Theater Arts, and a member of the Chief Executive
Round Table for the Professional Development Institute at the University
of North Texas. Mr. Altermann is a member of many organizations within
his community and his profession. He has also received the award for Who's
Who in American Art.
Dr.
O.L. Davis, Jr. - Distinguished Alumnus Award
Georgetown, TX - B.A. Government 1949; M.Ed.,
Public School Administration 1950
After Dr. Davis' studies at the University of North Texas, he received
his Ph.D. in Curriculum and Teaching in 1958 from the George Peabody College
for Teachers. He is the Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the
University of Texas at Austin. He is the author or co-author of more than
260 reports, articles and essays, and has been an editor for a number
of publications. Dr. Davis was also the President for the American Association
for Teaching and Curriculum from 1994-1995. He has also been the recipient
of numerous honors. For example, he was the College of Education's Distinguished
Alumnus for the University of North Texas in 1984, and he received the
Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contributions to Curriculum
Studies from the American Educational Research Association in 1996.

Sciences
Dr. Stanley W. Szczythko
Stevens Point, WI - MS 1975, Ph.D. 1978
As Professor and Chair of the Water Resources Department,
Dr. Szczythko's specialization is biological water quality assessment,
ecology, systematics and behavior of aquatic insects. Stan has published
numerous ecological articles and he has generated a great deal of money
by way of grants to help fund his work. Stan is a member of various
biological professional organizations.
Chemistry
C. James Carrico, M.D.
Dallas, TX - BS 1957
Dr. Carrico is Professor and Chairman of the Department of
Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas,
TX, and is a scholar in the area of care for trauma, burn, and critical
care patients. He received his medical training at UT Southwestern,
where he also began his academic career. He then moved to the University
of Washington in Seattle. He was on the faculty at Washington from '76-90,
including seven years as chairman of the Department of Surgery from
'83-90. He then returned to UT Southwestern to his present position
as Professor and Chairman. He is a past chairman of the American Board
of Surgery, a past chairman and current member of the Board of regents
of the American College of Surgeons, and past chairman of the American
Association for the Surgery of Trauma. He received the UNT Distinguished
Alumnus Award in 1991.

Judith P. Burns
Scottsdale, AZ - MS 1996
As Executive Vice President of Hospitality Technology Consulting,
Ms. Burns provides a variety of consulting services to businesses within
the hospitality area and beyond. Her prime focus points are project
management of reservation system conversions, the development of training
materials and the management of convention services. In addition, her
responsibilities include administration of the consulting practice.
Judith has provided research assistance for a major Canadian biographer
and has prepared training materials for a number of American corporations.
She is a member of the Speech Communication Association of America.
Dance
& Theater Arts
Sherry "Boo" Capers
Dallas, TX - BS 1973 (Drama)
As the originator of Capers for Kids, Inc., Boo operates a
creative arts school in a unique space designed specifically to teach
classes in creative drama, visual art, and play production to children
from ages 3 to 15 years old. Professional children's theater productions
are presented in the theater space several times a year. In addition
to the school, an outreach program provides classes in drama and visual
art to twenty schools and 2,500 children throughout the metroplex. Capers
for Kids has been profiled in The Dallas Morning News, a WFAA television
program, Texas Monthly, Dallas Child Magazine, Dallas Family Magazine,
Dallas Life Magazine and KCBI radio. Boo has been invited to present
workshops and seminars for UNT, UTD, SMU and numerous independent school
districts throughout the metroplex.
Dorothy
Stewart Wells
Las Cruces, NM - BS 1981, MA 1984 (Dance)
Dorothy began her career as a dance teacher at Stephen F.
Austin State University, where she was a lecturer in the dance program
and associate director of the SFA Dance Performing Company. From there
she moved to Las Cruces where she operated her own school of dance.
Since 1992, she has been teaching dance in the El Paso Independent School
District. At the present time, Ms. Wells is a teacher in the Dance Program
at Irvin High School in El Paso and directs the Irvin High School Dance
Club. She is a member of several professional dance organizations. Dorothy
was selected to Who's Who Among America's Teachers in 1996.
Kristin
Hodge Hassett
New Fairfield, CT - BA 1989 (RTVF)
Kristin's UNT theater experience earned her an internship
at The Dallas Theater Center. After graduation, she secured a job with
Gateway Playhouse in Belport Long Island, NY. Happily a three-month
engagement turned into ten years. Starting out as an electrician, she
worked her way up to Equity Stage Manager, Lighting Designer, and eventually
Production Manager. Ms. Hassett has toured the US numerous times working
on Camelot, A Chorus Line, Ain't Misbehavin', Song and Dance and Music
Man. Even more exciting was touring the Asian Continent with The Sound
of Music and A Chorus Line as Production Stage Manager and Oliver as
a Lighting Designer.

Ajay Babar
Plano, TX - BA 1993, MS 1995
Ajay joined SABRE Travel Information Network as a Strategic
Planning Analyst. He updated performance measurement in the training
and helpdesk unit by developing a Product Performance Tool and Training
Impact Tool. Ajay was recently promoted to Manager of Performance Measures.
He has introduced and developed a Centralized Tracking System for North
America and is currently developing a similar system for Europe, Mexico,
and Latin America. SABRE is the computer system widely utilized by all
airlines and travel agents.

Lee Palmer
Coppell, TX - BS 1990 (Manufacturing)
Lee is Senior Manager of Management Consulting with Grant
Thornton of Dallas, TX. Lee was with Andersen Consulting prior to joining
Grant Thornton and is the SAP Practice leader for the Dallas office.
He is primarily responsible for business development, practice development
and strategic marketing initiatives. Mr. Palmer's clients include LTV
Aircraft, Frito Lay and Maddox Metal Works. His recent work experience
includes: leading a 35-person team during a 2-year implementation process
for a nationwide food distributor; managing the software selection for
a made-to-order custom metals manufacturer; leading a project team in
the implementation of an integrated inventory management system and
telesales system. Lee is a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
Randall
Reed
Aubrey, TX - BS 1997 (Mechanical)
Mr. Reed graduated from the Mechanical Engineering Technology
program. He accepted a position with Peterbilt Motors in the custom
truck plant in Denton. This position in Division Engineering dealt specifically
with the chassis group and involved engineering review of customer specified
options to insure smooth assembly. Mr. Reed was promoted to a position
in Liaison Engineering, working in the frame group. Responsibilities
here focus on production support of on-line problems.
Robert
Starret
Denton, TX - BS 1996 (Manufacturing)
Mr. Starrett graduated from the TAC of ABET accredited Manufacturing
Engineering Technology. Prior to graduation, he was employed by Ernst
& Young (an international accounting firm), as a staff administrator.
Immediately after graduation, he accepted a position with Allen Telecom,
Decibel Products Division. As a Methods Specialist, he designed tooling
and fixtures and also optimized production processes. Robert was promoted
to Supervisor, Senior Industrial Engineer in the Manufacturing Engineering
Department of Allen Telecom. His responsibilities include supervision
of Methods Specialists as well as a range of administrative functions.
Alan
Triggs
Richardson, TX - BS 1995 (Electronics)
Mr. Triggs is a Senior Wireless Engineer with the Professional
Services Division at Ericsson Incorporated of Richardson, Texas. An
expert in wireless communication, Alan has led a number of projects
including the continuous monitoring of the competitors technology; an
international conference on Global Services, and a trial of a new diversity
technique in microcells. Mr. Triggs is Chair of the Fort Worth Chapter
of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers and is working
toward a PE license. Alan is an Adjunct Lecturer as SMU where he teaches
Digital Telephony to graduate students and has been a guest lecturer
at UTD, UT and at UNT.
Foreign
Language
Kellye Church
Pilot Point, TX - MA 1997
Before coming to UNT, Kellye taught Spanish and French for
10 years. She began her graduate studies at UNT in the French Institute,
receiving her MA in Spanish. Because of her dedication to the program
at UNT and her excellent skills as a teacher, Ms. Church was asked to
continue working as an adjunct faculty member in the Department of Foreign
Languages. She agreed, and has continued to serve as an inspiration
to many students to undertake both undergraduate and graduate studies
in a foreign language. In addition to being a faculty member at UNT,
she has taught classes at NCTC and TWU. In 1997, she received a student-body
award for instructional excellence from TWU.
Geography
David Drury
Bartonville, TX - BA 1993
Following graduation, David has held positions as Geographic
Information Systems Manager with Geo-Marine, Inc. and Woolpert Engineering,
and currently is the manager of the Geographic Information Systems program
at JPI, a fully integrated real estate firm, where he focuses on site
selection and market area analysis for upscale apartment communities.

Markham
Lewisville, TX - BS 1997
Michelle is currently a Geographic Information Systems analyst
with the Denton County Planning Department. Before joining Denton County,
she worked as a technical assistant with the City of Arlington Water
Utilities Department.
History
Dr. Numan V. Bartley
Athens, GA - MA 1961, Ph.D. 1966
"Bud" began his teaching career at Georgia Tech in 1966
and moved to the University of Georgia in 1972. He became the Coulter
Professor of History at Georgia in 1986, and held that position until
his recent retirement. Dr. Bartley is the author or co-author of eight
books and numerous articles on southern history, including The New South,
1945-1980, the eleventh volume in the prestigious History of the South
series. He served in 1993-94 as President of the Southern Historical
Association.
Journalism
Winifred K. Skinner
Denton, TX - MJ 1983
Winn came to UNT from Minnesota to warm up. While here, she
earned her MJ degree and was named an outstanding journalism graduate
student. She has worked as a copy and news editor for several papers,
including the Denton Record Chronicle, the Austin American Statesman
and the Fort Worth Star Telegram. She has been an Adjunct Professor
in the Journalism Department since 1989. A founding member of Habitat
for Humanity of Denton, she is currently chairing the affiliate's first
2-week blitz in September 1999.
Denise
Kile Walton
Dallas, TX - BS 1985
Denise is the owner of Paramount Communications, Inc. - a
public relations and marketing company. The company specializes in providing
clients with public relations plans, media relations, marketing, corporate
identity materials, broadcast productions and crisis communications
planning. In addition, Denise is the executive producer of Crime Stoppers,
a weekly crime-of-the-week news segment aired on WFAA-TV. Paramount
Communications has won four Texas Press Club Katie awards for excellence
in journalism. Currently, Denise is the President of the Press Club
of Dallas. She is the youngest member ever to be elected president,
and only the fourth woman ever to hold this office. She was the executive
producer for the 1996 Press Club's Gridiron show honoring Mayor Ron
Kirk, and the 1998 show honoring philanthropist Ray Nasher.
Mathematics
Dr. James Ochoa
Abilene, TX - Ph.D. 1996
Dr. Ochoa completed his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics under
Professor Paul Lewis. James is currently on the faculty at Hardin-Simmons
University in Abilene. James was an outstanding student and an excellent
teaching fellow while a graduate student at UNT.
Physics
Dr. Orin Wayne Holland
Oak Ridge, TN - MS 1979, Ph.D. 1980
At UNT, Wayne was an outstanding graduate student with a 4.0
GPA. After graduation, he accepted a position in the Solid State Physics
Division of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) where he is today.
He has had an outstanding career at ORNL. He is a recognized world class
researcher in Materials Synthesis and Processing of Materials for the
semiconductor industry. In 1983 he was given the prestigious IR-100
award for his development of "Supersaturated Semiconductor Alloys."
He also received the ORNL Sustained Achievement Award, which is only
given to a few of the better researchers at ORNL. Wayne has published
two books and over 170 scientific publications in journals. He has helped
to organize six international conferences, and has been granted nine
patents. He still stays very active with the UNT Physics Department.
At the present time, two UNT physics students are doing their Ph.D.
research work in his laboratory in Oak Ridge.

Science
Ozro Luke Davis III
Dallas, TX - BA 1976
Mr. Davis' political science degree provided the foundation
for both career paths that he followed after graduation. He first became
a public school teacher, focusing on high school social studies. He
developed a non-traditional curriculum for his students by channeling
the "stuff" of history /government into the daily lives of teenagers.
After four years in the classroom, he reverted to his pre-law training
at UNT and attended Texas Tech School of Law. He has practiced as a
trial attorney in Dallas since being licensed in 1983. The "business"
of a law practice has taken him from large firms to his current self-employment.
Luke has handled cases from small-claims court to antitrust cases in
the Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeal.
Psychology
Dr. Judy P. Sawyer
Denton, TX - Ph.D. 1988
During Dr. Sawyer's training at UNT, she received several
fellowships, and was a member of two honor societies. She is a charter
member of the American Psychological Society and a member of the Executive
Board of the Fort Worth Neuropsychological Society. She is also a member
of the National Academy of Neuropsychology and the International Neurospychological
Society. Currently, she is the President of the Neuropsychological Associates
of Denton and Fort Worth. In her consulting work, she provides psychological,
neuropsychological, jury research, and trial preparation services for
attorneys, businesses and health care providers.

Steve Flanigan
Colorado Springs, CO - BA 1977
Steve works as a director of photography. His clients include
AT&T, HBO, CBS, ABC, NBC, Lucent Technologies, ESPN and many more. He
has more than twenty years of experience in film and television lighting,
as a producer, and as director of photography. Mr. Flanigan has received
over 250 awards in cinematography and related fields. Also, he has recently
completed a book on lighting and cinematography entitled The Art of
Visualization (Focal Press Publishing.)
Speech
& Hearing Sciences
Rita Galbraith Baker
Fort Worth, TX - BA 1974, MS 1975
Mrs. Baker is the owner of the Bowie Speech and Hearing Inc.,
which is a full service rehabilitation facility providing physical,
occupational, and speech-language therapy as well as audiological services.
She has served as a speech-language pathologist at Cook/Ft. Worth Children's
Medical Center, the North Texas Easter Seal Rehabilitation Center, the
Oschner Hospital in Hew Orleans, and in several public schools. She
is very active in professional associations as well as community activities,
such as the Auxiliary to the American Osteopathic Association. She has
given numerous presentations on management of swallowing disorders,
and provides contract services to the major hospitals, home health agencies
and nursing homes throughout the metroplex area in language and swallowing
disorders in patients from pediatrics to geriatrics.
Dr.
Miriam Henoch
Denton, TX - BA 1971, MA 1972
Dr. Henoch is an Associate Professor and Director of Audiology
Services in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University
of North Texas. Miriam has been employed as a clinical audiologist at
Kaiser Permanente Medical Association, Humana Hospital, Veterans Affairs
Medical Centers and the Detroit Hearing and Speech Center. She has also
served on the faculty at UTD and San Jose State University. Dr. Henoch
has numerous presentations and publications in the field of audiology
and is President-Elect of the Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology. Her
primary research interests are in the areas of hearing loss in musicians,
disorders of auditory processing in adults, and hearing handicap in
adults.
