Undergraduate Academic Certificate Programs

Policy Guidelines

 

 

 

I.          Purpose

 

The University of North Texas proposes an upper-division Undergraduate Academic Certificate Program to meet workforce needs or provide student with skills or knowledge useful for lives or careers and to allow for specialization in academic disciplines.

 

II.         Admission Standards

 

The academic unit offering an Undergraduate Academic Certificate Program will determine appropriate admission standards for admission to the program, within the following guidelines:

 

A.              All students pursuing an Undergraduate Academic Certificate must meet regular UNT admission requirements.

 

B.              Candidates for admission to the Undergraduate Academic Certificates Program must meet the minimum academic standards for the discipline.

 

C.              Post-Baccalaureate students are eligible to receive an Undergraduate Academic Certificate.

 

III.       Curriculum Requirements

 

The academic unit offering an Undergraduate Academic Certificate Program will determine specific curriculum requirements for the program, within the following guidelines:

 

A.              Nine hours of course requirements for Undergraduate Academic Certificate Programs must be upper-division with a minimum of 12 semester credit hours but not more than 20 semester credit hours.

 

B.              Students are responsible for all prerequisites specified in course requirements.

 

C.              The Undergraduate Academic Certificate Programs have their own unique academic purpose and focus.

 

D.              Students must complete all hours for the Undergraduate Academic Certificate requirements at UNT.

 

 

IV.       Administration of the Undergraduate Academic Certificate Programs

 

A.              Undergraduate Academic Certificate Programs will be approved through the usual undergraduate curriculum approval process.

 

B.              Approved Undergraduate Academic Certificate Programs will be maintained by the Registrar’s Office.

 

C.              Undergraduate Academic Certificates will be handled as “programs” in the new student system.

 

D.              Upon completion of an Undergraduate Academic Certificate Program, students apply to their College/School Academic Dean. 

 

E.               Application forms are sent to the Registrar’s Office at the end of each term.

 

F.               The Registrar’s Office will award Undergraduate Academic Certificates at the end of the semester earned.  Posting is independent of awarding a degree.

 

G.              The Undergraduate Academic Certificate posting will begin at the end of the Fall 2004 term.

 

H.              The Registrar’s Office orders and mails certificates.

 

I.                 Hours used for attaining an Undergraduate Academic Certificate Programs could potentially exclude a student from consideration for the $1000 Tuition Rebate since all hours earned for the Undergraduate Academic Certificate are counted in the total hours earned.
