MINUTES
 
Meeting of the faculty of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of North Texas, 4:00 p.m., Tuesday, 23 October 2007. Silver Eagle, Suite C, of the Union Building.  Dean Warren Burggren presided. James Tanner (English) served as Secretary; John Gossett (Communication Studies) was Parliamentarian.

  1. The Call to Order was conducted by Dean Warren Burggren.
  2. Minutes for the meeting of Wednesday, 4 April 2007 were approved as presented.
  3. Awards were presented to departing department chairs: Ruthanne Thomas (CHEM); Alan Albaran (RTVF); Neal Brand (MATH); Floyd McDaniel  (PHYS).
  4. New Officers of the Faculty Senate were announced (Michael McPherson, Chair; Dick Wells,Vice Chair; Beth Thomsett-Scott, Secretary). Dick Wells spoke briefly on the role of the Faculty Senate, urging faculty to become involved in committee work.
  5. Dean Burggren announced  awards recently received by faculty in the College of Arts and Sciences:  
    Exemplary Online Teacher and Course Designer Award

  1. Dr. Wendy Wilkins (Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs) spoke informally on various topics:  First Tuesdays; Policy Revisions in Progress (Academic Affairs policies; annual merit evaluations; workload policy; promotion and tenure policy; 3rd-year  reviews; external reviewers; policy on emeritus faculty and emeritus administrators; professional development for chairs and associate deans; summer school policy; policy on serving transfer students; core curriculum math requirements, etc.)

  1. Dean Burggren spoke briefly on the Proposal Writing Workshop scheduled for November 1, 2007, 10:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M.  “Enabling and Empowering,” Dean Burggren stated, describe the new administrators’ attitude toward faculty members. Such a policy brings new freedom as well as new responsibilities for faculty.
