Using FTP
(File Transfer Protocol)
in the CAS General Access Labs

Starting the FTP Program
  1. Click on the Start button.
  2. Go up to CAS Software.
  3. Go over and down to Communications.
  4. Click on the WS_FTP95 LE.

This will open up a window called Session Properties.
  1. For HostName/Address:, you will have to decide which machine (csp01 through csp07) you want to connect to. Type csp0x.csci.unt.edu where the x can be any number between 1 and 7.
  2. For User Id:, type your CSCI account name.
  3. For Password:, type your CSCI account password.
  4. Click on the OK button.

This will open up a window called WS_FTP95 LE csp0x.csci.unt.edu. This window is divided into two areas:
  • Local System
  • Remote System
Local System is in the left window and is the computer you are sitting at.

Remote System is in the right window and is the home directory for your CSCI account.

If you have not already done so, insert your floppy disk into the floppy drive.

Select your floppy disk on the Local System:

  1. Scroll down in the left window.
  2. Locate drive [-a-].
  3. Double-click on [-a-].

Select the file you want to transfer:
  1. Scroll down in the appropriate window.
    • Left window if the file currently exists on your floppy disk.
    • Right window if the file currently exists in your CSCI home directory.
  2. If the file is inside a folder, double-click on that folder to open it.
  3. Click once on the file to highlight it.

Select the type of file transfer you need:

Beneath the two windows you can select either an ASCII or Binary file transfer. Click once on the method you want:

  • ASCII is for simple text (text files, source code,etc.).
  • Binary is for everything else (word-processor documents, executable programs, image files, etc.).
If you are unsure which mode you should use, click on Auto. Auto is not guaranteed, but it usually gives good results.

Transfer your file:

Between the left and right window are two transfer buttons:

Download: Transfer the file from the Remote System to the Local System.

Upload: Transfer the file from the Local System to the Remote System.

Click on the appropriate button to transfer your file.

Don't forget to exit!

After your transfer is complete, exit the FTP program by clicking on the Exit button.
