Bibliography of Reference Resources for Linguistics/SLA

This list should serve you in the years to come. It lists some (though not all) major bibliographic resources, some of which you can find in the UNT Library. For this assignment, go to the library, and determine if each resource is present. If you locate a particular resource, write its call number and which library it can be found.  This bibliography is broken into the following topics:

Sources of Background Information
Sources of background information include encyclopedias and yearbooks: good starting points for research. They provide a brief overview of a topic, basic factual information, and specific terms to use when searching the literature. Many background articles also refer to important works in the field.

Card Catalogs and Subject Headings
Card catalogs list books and periodicals (but not particular articles) in all branches of linguistics/SLA and in special collections. The public catalog is divided into two major sections: the name/title catalog and the subject catalog.

The name/title catalog lists books by or about a person, an institution, or a corporation. Books listed in this section of the catalog are by author and by title, and periodicals are listed by title or issuing organization.

The subject catalog lists library materials by subject. To find the correct subject headings for your research topic, use the Library of Congress Subject Headings, a two-volume set available in the library. Some relevant examples subject headings for the field are shown below:

Bibliographies
Bibliographies list materials published on a certain topic; some are limited to particular kinds of materials, authors, countries, or time periods. Most bibliographies, like this one, are selective, and the most useful selective bibliographies annotate (with descriptions or evaluations) the published materials. Publication dates limit many bibliographies, and in such cases, you will not locate the most recent research on a topic.
