Homework Study 3

Do the parents of Specific Language Impairment (SLI) children speak to the impaired children in longer utterances than to their unimpaired siblings? To answer this question, examine either the mother-child or the father-child data from the Conti corpus. Information on the Conti corpus is included in this manual.

Determine MLUs on the relevant data before the statistical analysis. Create a data file with the MLUs of the mother/father, of the SLI child, and of the unimpaired sibling.

Data file: anovastudy5.sav
Variables: MOT/FAT; SLI; SIBLING (Choose between MOT and FAT.)

Answer the following questions:

  1. Do the data meet the assumptions of ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis? Explain in full.

  2. What kinds of data do the columns of interest represent? How many data points are available? Should you perform any statistic on these data? Why or why not?

  3. How many independent variables and levels do the data have?

  4. Explain which statistic(s) you ran and why.

  5. If you ran any statistics, copy the results here and write whether or not the .05 level of significance is attained.

  6. Are these findings meaningful (as opposed to merely significant)? Explain.
