Homework Study 2

For children up to age 3 learning English, is there a relationship between the child's MLU and that child's age? To answer this question, a researcher examines the acquisition of English in Adam's data.

Do the necessary MLU work on Adam's data (up to age 3;0) if you have not already done so. Because Adam’s age data are in the non-mathematical form of "years; months.days", state these figures in decimal-based form. Then create a data file and perform the relevant statistical analyses.

Data file:  adammlu.sav
Variables: MLU, AGE

Answer the following questions:

  1. Write the exact CLAN command you used to come up with Adam's MLU figures.

  2. What kinds of data do the two variables in the data file represent?

  3. The researcher wants to run a Pearson r statistic on these data. Do the data meet all of the required assumptions of the Pearson r? If Pearson r is not appropriate, which statistic would you suggest?

  4. Is this problem one-tailed or two-tailed? Explain.

  5. If permissible, calculate the statistic and write the result below.

  6. Is this result significant; and, if so, what is the probability that it occurred by accident?

  7. The match-up between MLU and age account for how much of the data's variability?
