Homework Study 3

A researcher examining undergraduate students' evaluations of their English instructors wishes to know whether the students' overall evaluations of instructors are related to the students' academic standing (freshman, sophomore, etc.). To this end, the researcher examines data in the "evals.sav" file.

Datafile: evals.sav
Variables: Q1, Q27

Answer the following questions:

  1. What kinds of data do the two variables of interest represent?

  2. The researcher wants to run a Pearson r statistic on these data. Do the data meet the required assumptions of the Pearson r? If Pearson r is not appropriate, what statistic would you suggest?

  3. Is this problem one-tailed or two-tailed? Explain.

  4. Calculate the relevant statistic and write the result below.

  5. Is this result significant; and, if so, what is the probability that it occurred by accident?

  6. What do the results above indicate about the relationship between evaluations and academic standing?
