Note on Filenames

SPSS, Windows, Notepad, and other programs use filenames for files like data files and result files. Filenames must have a main part and, following a period, may optionally have an extension. The following examples illustrate this convention:

The main part for filenames must use standard alphanumeric characters; under DOS and Windows 3.x, the main part can not be longer than eight characters long and includes no spaces. The optional extensions can be up to three alphanumeric characters long. Some programs automatically add extensions to files. For example, SPSS automatically adds the extension ".sav" to data files.

In this course, I provide a filename for data files for each exercise. The following example exercise illustrates this concept:

Class Study 1
Professor Klotz wants to know whether or not his new test on knowledge of computer-related terms lists his students in the same way that the well-known standardized SCHLEIM test does. He has 40 students take each of the two tests, and then he lists the results of the two tests side by side to perform a Pearson r statistic.

Data file: c7.sav
Variables: KLOTZ, SCHLEIM

Student    KLOTZ   SCHLEIM
1              122        152
2              115        116
