International Studies / Political Science major awarded Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship

Marcelo Ostria, a senior majoring in both international studies and political science, has been awarded a $25,000 Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarship. The funds will support a year of post-baccalaureate study in Santiago, Chile during 2010-11, after which Ostria plans to pursue either a law degree with an international focus or a doctoral degree in international affairs.

Department of Dance and Theatre presents Vincent in Brixton

The Department of Dance and Theatre presents Vincent in Brixton, a theatrical portrait that explores the early years of van Gogh's life, as the artist-to-be works for a European art dealer and deals with his tormented feelings. The production will take place at November 6-7 at 8 p.m.; November 8 at 2:30 p.m.; and November 11-14 at 8 p.m. in the Studio Theatre in the RTFP Building.

Marrero’s La Familia to premiere as Cambalache Teatro en Español production

This coming weekend, associate professor Teresa Marrero, from the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, will premiere La Familia, a series of monologues for adults, at the Bath House Cultural Center in Dallas. The work is based on her book Entre la Argentina y Cuba: cuentos nómadas de viajes y tangos (Between Argentina and Cuba: Nomad Stories of Travels and Tangos).

Graduate Student in Department of Psychology wins award from Texas Psychological Association

Jill Rogstad, a graduate student in psychology, recently received the 2009 Mary Alice Conroy Award for the Best Student Paper in Forensic Psychology from the Forensic Practice Division of the Texas Psychological Association (TPA). The award is for her paper, “Gender Differences in Contributions of Emotion to Psychopathy and Antisocial Personality Disorder.”

Chemistry professors’ mentoring supports Seimens Competition finalists

Four students from UNT’s Texas Academy of Mathematics and Science (TAMS) – Sai Achi, Somak Das, Peter Hu and Sahil Khetpal – were named regional finalists in the 2009 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. William Acree, chair of the Department of Chemistry, mentored Sai Achi to develop his research project. Angela Wilson, associate professor of chemistry and co-director of the Center for Advanced Scientific Computation and Modeling, worked with Somak Das.
