Dean Warren Burggren announced, in an August 24 memo to CAS faculty, that James Meernik has been named associate dean for administrative affairs for the college. In this capacity, Meernik’s responsibilities include academic personnel, facilities, and strategic planning. “As a former chair of the Political Science Department, Jim already has a great deal of administrative experience, and we are excited to welcome him to the college’s administrative team,” said Burggren. Meernik had been serving as interim associate dean since January 1.
The college welcomed another new associate dean and a new assistant dean in late spring 2009:
Floyd “Del” McDaniel, Regents Professor of physics, has been serving as associate dean for research since April 1, after six months as the college’s senior research facilitator. In that capacity, he works closely with faculty in the college, as well as with the Office of the Vice President for Research and Economic Development, to support the college’s quest for additional external research funding. McDaniel’s team will be complete with the anticipated addition of a yet-to-be-selected director of proposal development/design for the college.
After a number of years as the CAS director of computing support services, Tim Christian was promoted to assistant dean for information technology services as of Apr. 1. In this new role, Christian continues to supervise a large staff dedicated to providing CAS students and personnel with the technological resources needed to support them in their activities. The unit he heads, formerly known as CAS Computing Support Services, has just been renamed CAS Information Technology Services, a title that is more representative of its current role in the college.
In his recent letter to the faculty regarding the three dean appointments, Burggren said the “college administration is now fully staffed and looking forward to helping you enhance your teaching, scholarship and service activities.”
Sept. 1 was the first day on the job for Donna Chandler, new director of development for the science and mathematics areas of the college. She joins Brian White, director of development for the humanities and social sciences areas. Collectively, they will work with CAS departments to increase outside funding from alumni, foundations, and other private sources. Another relatively recent addition to CAS is Dianne Gibbons, global alumni and student liaison, who came to CAS in late March. Among her many activities, she is working to encourage the formation of UNT alumni clubs around the world. Chandler, White, and Gibbons complete the CAS development team led by Stan Walker, senior director of major gifts.
Beyond the CAS Dean’s Office, the college welcomes new chairs in four departments for 2009-2010: Lt. Col. Richard G. Elkins is the new commanding officer of the Department of Aerospace Studies, William Acree is the newly instated chair of the Department of Chemistry, John Todd has been named chair of the Department of Political Science (after serving in the interim position since January), and Vicki Campbell has been appointed chair in the Department of Psychology.
