The University of North Texas Alpha Lambda chapter of Phi Alpha Theta History Honor Society has received the Best Chapter Award in Division VI, which includes universities with enrollments of 23,000 students or more. It is the third time since 1994 that the UNT chapter has been named a Best Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, which has 859 chapters in all 50 states and has initiated more than 281,000 members.

Phi Alpha Theta is open to college and university undergraduates who have overall grade point averages of 3.0 or better, and who have completed at least 12 hours of history and have overall GPAs of 3.1 or better for those courses, and to graduate students with overall GPAs of 3.1 or better and GPAs of 3.5 or better in at least 12 hours of history courses. A student does not have to be majoring or minoring in history to join.

Phi Alpha Theta presents Best Chapter Awards each year for exceptional activities and projects sponsored by local chapters. The awards consist of $250 grants for the purchase of books for the chapters' college/university libraries.

Chapters are selected for the awards, and for honorable mentions, in their divisions based on activities and service performed over the previous academic year, and must submit a scrapbook documenting their programs to the national office. Derek Boetcher, president of UNT's chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, said the chapter may have been selected for its successful hosting of the conference for the Phi Alpha Theta Northeast Texas Region, which consists of chapters from 22 colleges and universities. More than 20 UNT students presented research papers at the regional conference, taking four of the six awards given out for best papers.

In addition, several members of UNT's chapter attended and presented papers at national professional conferences. The chapter also hosted a historical games night and a monthly movie night, showing one episode of the seven-part 2008 miniseries "John Adams" at each movie night. Members could also go on field trips to local museums.

The Alpha Lambda chapter of Phi Alpha Theta was formed at North Texas in 1945, and has approximately 40 active members.
